MANGALORE: Converting agriculture land for non-agriculture purposes will no longer be a tedious affair in Dakshina Kannada district.
The district administration is all set to usher in a system where applications for conversion of such land will be received online, and report of village accountants sent directly to authorities concerned for their approval, minister for ports, environment, inland water transport J Krishna Palemar said here on Tuesday.

Delivering the 61st Republic Day address after unfurling the National Flag at the district RD celebrations, Palemar, also the district in-charge minister, said this new system will be ushered in on a trial basis in Bantwal and Mangalore taluks of the district. "This is for the first time that such a system is being tried out anywhere in Karnataka," he noted.

People seeking conversion of their land for non-agriculture purpose can submit their applications to the gram panchayat or to the nemmadi centres, Palemar said. In a move to plug revenue leakage on the sale of stamp papers, the government has entered in to an 'e-stamping' arrangement with Stock Holding Corporation of India and Corporation Bank.

This service will shortly be provided through post offices and other commercial banks.

The Karnataka Valuation and E-Registration (KAVERI) software for property registration is being upgraded and people will shortly be able to register their property online. Such a step, Palemar said will reduce the prevalent delays being experienced by people in sub-registrar's office. The data will be fed online and the process of registration will be completed online once the data reaches the sub-registrar's office on time.

The district has taken a major step forward in distribution ration cards to people in above and below poverty line categories. So far, 1.73-lakh BPL and 1.98-lakh BPL cards have been issued to people, he said adding that the remaining 23,521 cards will be distributed at the earliest. The lacunae's in the ration cards distributed so far, such as mistakes in names, religion and other details of the family, will be corrected in a phased manner, he noted.

In a move aimed at reaching out to victims of floods that ravaged North Karnataka, the district administration handed over a cheque for Rs 2.63 crore to the state government through Palemar on this occasion. Palemar thanked the public for their generosity.
