Tamil Nadu Farmers concerned at power crisis, plan stir on May 7

Expressing concern over the looming power crisis, the Tamil Nadu Vivasayeegal Sangam has decided to hold demonstrations in front of the offices of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) across the State on May 7.

A meeting of the Sangam State committee held under presidentship of K. Balakrishnan pointed out that the power distribution was becoming worse and agriculture and tiny and small scale industries were badly hit.

The TNEB had announced 9-hour supply for agriculture but a 10-hour power cut was gripping rural Tamil Nadu, the committee said.

Three-phase power supply should be provided for agriculture – 6 hours in morning and another 6 hours in evening.

"Otherwise, farming activities will suffer in the State," the committee observed.

Expansion works of the Mettur thermal power station should be expedited, it urged.

Severe drought

It also pointed out that districts such as Tiruchi, Salem, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Tiruvannamalai and Ramanathapuram were facing severe drought.

The government should take efforts on a war footing to mitigate the water problem. These districts should be declared drought-hit.
